The Growth of the Number and Size Of Cities in China

China might have the most troubling disparity between the number of cars and trees. It is not as big of a deal as England, which has a finite amount of space and only so much land to lose to construction. Hong Kong has experienced a similar growth rate as it is one of the largest cities in China.

The amount of cars in Hong Kong has grown, which has shrunk the amount of vegetation in the city. If you have lived in a city on the coast of the US for a long time, you may think that every city has a well-developed public transportation system. In the Midwest and the Rockies, people are almost entirely dependent on cars for transportation.

It is a big deal for a country to host the Olympics. It is a big deal for China, who was ostracized by the rest of the world for most of the 20th century. You would have thought that the Chinese government would be more concerned about Beijing's status when it hosted the games in 2008.

Concrete in Roman Architecture

Many Roman structures used concrete to make them survive to the present day. The Baths of Caracalla in Rome are examples. The Pont du Gard in southern France is one of the Roman aqueducts and bridges that have masonry on their concrete core.

The cure rate or properties of the material can be changed with admixtures. recycled materials are used as concrete ingredients. Fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants, is one of the most spicuous materials.

Concrete is usually prepared as a fluid and poured into forms, which are containers erected in the field to give the concrete its desired shape. Slip forming and steel plate construction are some of the ways in which concrete can be prepared. Concrete can be mixed into dryer, non-fluid forms and used in factory settings to make precast concrete products.

Adding chemical admixtures such as plasticizer or superplasticizer can increase the slump of a mix. The curing of concrete leads to increased strength and lower permeability. The setting of cement can cause freezing or overheating.

Poor curing can cause problems. A mixture of aggregate and various polymers can be reinforced. The cost of cement is higher than that of lime-based cements, but they have advantages over the other two.

Sharing of Infrastructure and Resources

Sharing of infrastructure and resources is possible with proximity. When multiple people can use the infrastructure, it makes sense. The high cost of construction for facilities like seaports and airports is only economical when multiple entities can help pay for and use them.

Sharing benefits can also occur within a firm that is increasing return to scale in production. Concentration of production in one or a few locations is better for dispersed operations than sharing expensive machinery among different production processes. The professor at the Stockholm Resilience Center is Thomas Elmqvist.

Concrete Jungle: A Comparison of the Jamaican and Blackwell Versions

The original Jamaican and Blackwell versions of "Concrete Jungle" are both great songs. It's worth checking out the 2001 edition of catch a fire for the chance to hear both versions at the same time.
